Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society Inc. As an Animal Care Specialist, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the animals in our care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Animal Care and Handling
    • Provide daily care and attention to dogs, cats, and other animals, including feeding, cleaning, and exercise.
    • Assist with the loading and unloading of animals for transport.
    • Ensure the comfort and cleanliness of all animals on the adoption floor.
  • Facility Maintenance
    • Assist with cleaning, sanitizing, and storing of crates and equipment.
    • Ensure animal areas are clean and orderly and stocked with food, litter, newspaper, and other essential items.
  • Documentation and Communication
    • Document behavior observations and report them to management.
    • Document medical observations and report them to clinic staff.
    • Communicate effectively with other members of the adoption team and with other staff.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
    • Work collaboratively with other members of the adoption team and with other staff.
    • Attend staff meetings and provide constructive feedback.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Experience working with animals in a veterinary, boarding, or shelter environment preferred.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work well in a team environment.
    • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds or up to 75lbs with reasonable accommodation.
  • Work Environment
    • Work in a high noise level area.
    • Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic diseases, bites, and scratches.
