Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a lifeguard and/or swim instructor, creating a safe and welcoming environment for all members and guests.
  • Prevent accidents by scanning assigned zones and enforcing health and safety rules.
  • Conduct swim classes in accordance with YMCA standards, promoting enthusiasm and excitement among participants.
  • Exercise mature judgment and strong decision-making skills, especially in emergency situations.
  • Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to achieve departmental goals.
  • Respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and report any issues.
  • Set up and put away equipment as needed.
  • Participate in in-service training and maintain certification requirements.
  • Uphold the core values of the YMCA in all interactions.
  • Work scheduled shifts, including weekends, and be available for substitute assignments.

Requirements

  • YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross lifeguard certification.
  • At least 6 months of swim instructor experience and willingness to obtain YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making.
  • Positive and firm communication skills.
  • Observant and safety-conscious.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and have full range of body movement.
  • Current certifications in Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED.
