Position Overview
This senior-level IT role entails overseeing and providing systems support for extensive Linux computing environments, alongside security-oriented projects. As a key member of the Systems Architecture & Administration team, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and modification of operating-system-level software, as well as the configuration and deployment of enterprise server hardware. You will initiate and manage projects in collaboration with fellow systems administrators, fostering knowledge sharing and teamwork.

Your responsibilities will include system optimization, troubleshooting, security measures, recovery strategies, capacity planning, and ensuring business continuity, all while meticulously documenting processes. You will also develop software necessary for UVM systems and engage in operational security initiatives, including our vulnerability management system and SIEM platform, as well as contribute to the enforcement of security policies based on industry standards. Additionally, you will support UVM's enterprise server and storage infrastructure, which encompasses numerous servers, VMware vSphere, and extensive SAN storage.

Automation and Supervision
This role emphasizes significant automation of services through scripting and software development. You will report to the Infrastructure Team Lead within the Systems Architecture & Administration department. Given the potential impact of changes to system-level software on thousands of users, including those involved in research, education, and administrative functions, a keen attention to detail, thorough planning, and sound judgment are essential.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a technology-related discipline and five years of systems administration experience in a large-scale complex server environment are required. Alternatively, four additional years of experience may substitute for the degree.
  • Proficiency in Linux, with a preference for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Comprehensive understanding of core networking principles, including experience in network and systems troubleshooting.
  • Advanced skills in Python or PowerShell.
  • Familiarity with software version control systems (git).
  • Experience with virtualization technologies, particularly VMware vSphere.
  • Demonstrated success in deploying reliable and secure Internet-facing services for large organizations.
  • Strong troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Effective communication and collaborative teamwork skills.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with large-scale IDPS or next-generation firewall systems.
  • Knowledge of security standards implementation and management (e.g., NIST) and familiarity with NSPM-33 requirements.
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, etc.).
  • Familiarity with SIEM/logging solutions such as Splunk.
  • Experience in vulnerability management and remediation.
  • Expertise in large-scale filesystem and storage environments.
  • Knowledge of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), ideally VMware Horizon or similar technologies.
  • Experience in an academic institution setting.

Compensation Information
Anticipated pay range is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Additional Information
This position may require a probationary period and occasional evening or weekend work. A hybrid work schedule may be available, allowing for a combination of on-campus and remote work, in accordance with university policies. A background check is required for this position.
