Job Title: RN Nurse Specialist

Join Danbury Hospital as a RN Nurse Specialist and take on a challenging role in our Cardiac Surgery department.

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced RN Nurse Specialist to provide clinical leadership and expertise in the area of cardiovascular surgery. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for diagnosing human responses to actual or potential health problems related to surgical intervention, providing supportive or restorative care, health counseling, and teaching, as well as case finding and referral.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide clinical leadership and expertise in the area of cardiovascular surgery, counseling staff in conformance with Hospital policy.
  2. Assess, monitor, and implement supportive nursing care, health counseling, and education to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery, including complete nursing assessment on admission.
  3. Assist surgeon/anesthesia provider in cardiovascular surgical procedures, including Swan Ganz Insertions, Intra-aortic Balloon Insertion, permanent pacemakers, and other invasive procedures.
  4. Ensure a sterile environment while performing all scubbing and circulating duties, obtaining and documenting data collected.
  5. Follow ACLS protocol, under the direction of a cardiac surgeon/anesthesia provider, in the event of a complication or code 99, assessing and monitoring patient, establishing IV access, defibrillating, and administering drugs as needed.
  6. Collect data for research studies, maintain proper levels of medications and supplies in the inventory, assist with the PI Program, and coordinate the safety education program.
  7. Reprogram permanent pacemakers per physician order.
  8. Complete and maintain all cardiovascular specific competencies related to scrubbing and circulation duties, including all competencies related to cardiac specific equipment and maintain accurate implant records, and perform all mandated reporting of implants.
  9. Assist in the education of nursing and medical students.
  10. Develop and initiate teaching strategies that reflect educational needs of staff.
  11. Evaluate staffing requirements and recommend changes as needed.
  12. Oversee program compliance, ensuring the delivery of quality and cost-effective care through problem-solving and implementation of quality assurance/improvement measures.
  13. Assist in the technical, radiological, and nursing functions for all on-call procedures after hours, assist in the Performance Improvement Program of the department, and assist in the training and development of other staff members.
  14. Achieve the organization's established expectations with regard to quality service, teamwork, self-development, and community service.
  15. Fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Associate's Level Degree
  • Minimum of 3 years job-related experience
  • Minimum of one year of RN OR experience or recent completion of Periop 101
  • State of CT RN License
  • BLS certification required
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BSN preferred
  • Certification in area of specialty
Working Conditions:

Manual: significant manual skills/motor coordination and finger dexterity

Occupational: significant occupational risk

Physical Effort: Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force

Physical Environment: Some exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
