Job Title: Education Intern

Kentucky Derby Museum is a leading cultural institution in the Louisville region, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history and heritage of the Kentucky Derby.

As an Education Intern, you will play a vital role in supporting the Museum's education initiatives, working closely with the Curator of Education, Museum Educator/Program Coordinator, and Outreach Coordinator to develop and deliver engaging educational programs for students of all ages.

The primary responsibilities of this position include:

  • Assisting with outreach visits, field trip visits, and virtual outreaches to schools and educational institutions.
  • Learning and delivering PK-12 educational programming and Churchill Downs tours, aligned with state curriculum standards.
  • Supporting the organization and exhibition of the HAWA Art exhibit, a unique and interactive experience for visitors.
  • Conducting field research and professional development assigned by the supervisor, staying up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in museum education.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized workspace, including the Hermitage Farm Education suite, and ensuring the proper care and handling of props and educational materials.
  • Developing knowledge and skills in museum education, pedagogy, and classroom management, with a focus on creating engaging and interactive learning experiences.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead all presentational aspects of a field trip, developing your public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Create a new education program aligned with state curriculum standards, showcasing your creativity and innovation.
  • Develop an online educational curriculum package, making educational resources accessible to a wider audience.
  • Meet with department directors to gain a deeper understanding of each department's role and responsibilities.
  • Explore the role of professional development organizations in career development, staying ahead of the curve in your field.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A strong background in History, Public History, Museum Studies, Education, Equine Business/Management, or a related field.
  • Enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university.
  • Availability to work a minimum of 150 hours between January and April, with a flexible schedule to accommodate Museum events and programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office systems, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to pass a federal and state background check, ensuring a safe and secure work environment.
