Pharmacy Technician Role in Mental Health and Developmental Services

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Pharmacy Technician to join our team at the Department of State Hospitals. This role will involve working closely with our pharmacists to perform a variety of tasks related to medication management, including filling unit dose patient containers, maintaining repackaging machines, and restocking emergency kits.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Follow pharmacy and nursing policy/procedures and Administrative Directives regarding medication processes.
  2. Fulfill Automated Dispensing Devices throughout the hospital.
  3. Maintain repackaging machine.
  4. Restock repackaging machine.
  5. Pre-pack medication tablets/capsules for the unit dose &/or Automated Dispensing Devices.
  6. Fax validated physician medication orders to the appropriate units.
  7. Filing documentation.
  8. Restock unit emergency kits.
  9. Interface with units regarding unit dose processes and Automated Dispensing Devices.
  10. Assist pharmacists by filling prescriptions for discharge patients.
  11. Accurately read and interpret physician's orders.
  12. Work directly with pharmacists to ensure accuracy of data collection, interpretation, and input of physician orders.
  13. Interface with unit regarding physician orders scheduling, distribution of automated orders and Medication Administration Records.
  14. Interface with unit staff for retrieval of copies of physicians' orders.
  15. Process patient medication transfer orders.
  16. Knowledge of medical terms, abbreviations, medications (Brand, generics, dosage forms, and strength).
  17. Purchase from prime vendor and individual vendors.
  18. Solve purchasing problems.
  19. Stock shelves, rotate stock, check for outdates.
  20. Participate in medication room inspections.
  21. Update shelves with prime vendor stickers.

Requirements

  1. Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Pharmacy Technician issued by the State Board of Pharmacy set forth in Section 4115 and 4202 of the Business and Professions Code.
  2. Either I: One year of clerical work experience in a pharmacy relieving a pharmacist of clerical or subprofessional duties. Primary duties must have included stocking shelves with pharmaceutical supplies or typing pharmaceutical labels. [Experience in the California state service applied toward this requirement must be in a class at a level of responsibility not less than that of Office Assistant (General), Range B.] (Academic education above the 12th grade may be substituted for the experience on the basis of one year of education of a science or mathematical nature being equivalent to six months' experience. Students who are enrolled in the last semester or its equivalent of course work which upon completion will fulfill these requirements will be admitted to the examination, but they must submit evidence of completion before they can be considered for appointment.)
  3. OR II: Completion of an academic curriculum and formal on-the-job training program for Pharmacy Technician.

Working Conditions

This position requires you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).

  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
  • You MUST include your Pharmacy Technician registration/license number on your application.
