Job Summary

Under the direction of a radiologist, performs imaging procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail.

Operates MRI/X-ray equipment to make MRIs/radiographs of designated body parts. Responsibilities include knowledge of all MRI procedures. Will be available for emergency on-call procedures as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produces high-quality images on all patient age groups under the direction of a radiologist.
  • Explains procedures to patients and positions and immobilizes them for the procedure.
  • Selects appropriate technical factors for specific body parts and reviews images for quality and accuracy of positioning.
  • Assists radiologists with invasive procedures and sets up rooms properly for specific procedures.
  • Practices principles of sterile technique and labels items on trays in accordance with Joint Commission standards.
  • Selects appropriate procedure trays/instruments needed and obtains images as requested by radiologists to facilitate diagnosis of disease processes.
  • Maintains patient and personal safety and provides MRI magnet safety to all patients as needed.
  • Practices personal radiation safety measures to minimize annual occupational exposure levels and follows principles of good body mechanics when lifting.
  • Utilizes appropriate transfer techniques for patient conditions and uses two identifiers approved by the hospital to verify patient identity.
  • Administers appropriate contrast media as directed by radiologists and assesses patients for possible contrast media sensitivity prior to beginning venipuncture.
  • Attends annual inservice on venipuncture techniques and performs venipuncture as required for procedures.
  • Completes all exams timely in PACS and properly performs procedures for making patient CDs.
  • Verifies that written physician orders match orders in PACS and verifies all images are in PACS, scans any required documents, and adds additional study information in notes sections as needed.
  • Operates film digitizers to add films to PACS.

Qualifications

The MRI/Radiologic Technologist is a high school graduate or equivalent, with some college preferable. ARRT/MRI registered and must have satisfactorily completed an AMA-approved radiologic technologist 24-month training program. CPR certification required.
