Position Overview

This recruitment is aimed at filling a Senior Environmental Engineer or Environmental Engineer II.

The Office of Drinking Water is focused on ensuring safe and dependable drinking water for all, collaborating with various stakeholders to support public health initiatives.

The Senior Environmental Engineer plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of the Office of Drinking Water as a licensed Professional Engineer, overseeing the regional drinking water program and supervising staff under the guidance of the Assistant Regional Manager.

The Environmental Engineer II assists in the mission of the Office of Drinking Water by managing the regional drinking water program in designated counties under the direct supervision of the Assistant Regional Manager.

Key Responsibilities for Both Positions:
  • Apply engineering knowledge to evaluate and authorize plans, specifications, and documents to ensure adherence to health regulations.
  • Conduct sanitary surveys and assessments of public water systems.
  • Support water systems in achieving and maintaining compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare for and respond to drinking water emergencies, ensuring public safety and notification.
  • Provide technical guidance to local health jurisdictions, agencies, water system operators, officials, engineers, and the public.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Drinking Water team to meet program goals and undertake additional assigned responsibilities.
The duty station for this full-time permanent position is in the Spokane Valley area, with the possibility of a home-based arrangement for those residing in the established Eastern Region. Most work is conducted in the field, within communities, or from a home office. Fieldwork includes attending local meetings and performing technical assistance visits and sanitary surveys.

To qualify at the Senior Environmental Engineer level:
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering field such as sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or a related discipline.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Washington state or the ability to obtain licensure through comity within six months of hire.
  • One or more years of experience in environmental engineering or public health administration, particularly related to state and federal drinking water regulations.
To qualify at the Environmental Engineer II level:
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering field.
Desired Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in environmental engineering or public health administration related to drinking water regulations.
  • Experience in designing, operating, or working with surface water treatment facilities.
