Job Overview

Under the general oversight of the Police Aide Supervisor, the Community Safety Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of essential law enforcement functions. These include:
  1. Engaging in diverse law enforcement tasks such as traffic management, vehicle escorting, and emergency response activities; or
  2. Enforcing parking regulations, maintaining and repairing parking meters, collecting revenue, and representing the City in legal proceedings for parking violations as necessary;
  3. Monitoring neighborhoods to ensure compliance with local watering restrictions; and
  4. Executing a combination of the duties outlined in points one through three above.
Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Key Responsibilities

The Community Safety Assistant will perform duties as specified under either part "A" or "B" as follows, or a combination of such duties as required:

Part A:
  • Provide escorts for school buses and other vehicles as required.
  • Assist in escorting oversized vehicles when necessary.
  • Direct traffic during designated times, at accidents, and during special events.
  • Set up and dismantle traffic barriers.
  • Assist visitors and residents, serving as a point of contact for tourist information.
  • Participate in special assignments and projects as designated.
Part B:
  • Inspect public parking areas for compliance with permit regulations and issue citations for violations.
  • Maintain and repair public parking meters.
  • Collect revenue from parking meters and credit card transactions, ensuring accurate daily accounting.
  • Enforce roadway and right-of-way regulations.
  • Represent the City in court regarding parking citations issued.
  • Engage in special assignments and projects as assigned.
Part C:
  • Patrol neighborhoods to ensure adherence to watering restrictions due to drought conditions.
  • Issue warnings to residents who violate these restrictions.
  • Notify law enforcement of repeat violations at specific addresses.
Qualifications

Applicants should possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent certification, along with one year of relevant experience demonstrating responsibility; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid Florida Driver's License is required.

Additional Information

Successful candidates will have knowledge of traffic laws, city ordinances, and safety protocols related to traffic management and parking. Familiarity with geographic locations within the City and understanding of watering restrictions is essential.

Applicants should demonstrate the ability to maintain records and reports, work collaboratively with colleagues and the public, follow instructions effectively, and manage traffic control duties in various environmental conditions. Skills in repairing and maintaining parking meters are also necessary.
