Job Summary:
Provide critical emergency medical services to the community. Respond promptly to emergency situations involving injured or ill individuals. Facilitate inter-facility transfers to and from hospitals, nursing homes, or other designated locations while delivering necessary medical care. Assist in the upkeep of equipment and facilities and perform minor administrative tasks as required.

Key Responsibilities:
The following duties are indicative of the role but do not encompass all responsibilities:

  • Deliver emergency medical services by responding to urgent calls, administering basic and advanced life support, and conducting local and regional inter-facility transfers. Ensure equipment is restocked and decontaminated as needed.
  • Conduct public tours of facilities, educating the community about EMS and safety protocols, while maintaining ongoing education and physical training.
  • Perform light maintenance on buildings and vehicles.
  • Carry out additional tasks as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge: Familiarity with departmental regulations, policies, and procedures. Comprehensive understanding of EMS prehospital care for medical and trauma patients, aligned with DSHS certification standards. Awareness of local maps and emergency response routes.
  • Skills: Proficient in operating and driving an ambulance safely and professionally during both emergency and non-emergency situations. Skilled in emergency medical techniques, patient assessment, and the use of specialized equipment. Effective oral and written communication skills. Competent in using computers and MS Office applications.
  • Abilities: Capacity to remain calm and act decisively in emergencies, directing coworkers effectively. Ability to inspect, operate, and maintain EMS equipment in accordance with DSHS certification standards. Maintain BLS certification and demonstrate proficiency in swimming. Capability to endure physically demanding tasks under challenging conditions and participate in the fire department's fitness program. Flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, while ensuring consistent attendance.

Other Characteristics:
Uphold standards that meet or exceed the NAEMT Code of Ethics; demonstrate professionalism, integrity, commitment, and teamwork as a member of the Fire Department.

Education, Certification, and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Valid Texas Class C driver's license. Certification as a Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) at the time of employment. Valid BLS Healthcare Provider certification.

Minimum Qualifications:
Active DSHS EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic certification. Valid Texas Driver's License with a driving record that meets City of Kerrville standards.

Salary and Benefits:
EMS Crew - EMT1: $46,011.68/yr. $3,834.31/mo.
Base Pay plus Certification & Education Pay, if qualified. Minimum EMT Basic or Advanced EMT certification required upon hire. Schedule: 12 hr shiftwork with 2 shifts on & 2 shifts off.
EMS Crew - EMT2: $51,014.49/yr. $4,251.21/mo.
Base Pay plus Certification & Education Pay, if qualified. Minimum EMT Basic or Advanced EMT certification required upon hire. Schedule: 24 hr shiftwork.
EMS Crew - MEDIC: $57,474.56/yr. $4,789.55/mo.
Base Pay plus Certification & Education Pay, if qualified. Paramedic certification required upon hire. Schedule: 24 hr shiftwork.

Certification & Education Pay:
DSHS Certification Pay: DOQ $600/yr. $50/mo. EMT Basic $900/yr. $75/mo. Advanced EMT $4,200/yr. $350/mo. Paramedic Level I $5,100/yr. $425/mo. Paramedic Level II (after probation).

Specialty Team Pay:
$300/yr. $25/mo. for Technical Rescue Team, Special Operations Unit, and Field Training Officer.

Step Pay Plan:
3% annual increase to a maximum. Longevity pay of $48 for each year of service.

Texas Municipal Retirement System:
Employee contributes 7%, City matches 2:1, vested in 5 years.
