Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist II plays a vital role in the operating room, working under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician to ensure safe and quality patient care during surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in surgical procedures as a member of the surgical team, passing instruments and supplies as directed, and assisting with acute emergency situations.
  • Assist in tissue retraction, limb support, and ensure instruments are clean and functioning properly.
  • Request additional supplies during surgery as needed and assist the surgeon with closing, suturing, stapling, cauterizing, and bandaging the patient.
  • Conform to prescribed aseptic techniques required for surgical procedures by scrubbing prior to working in the sterile field.
  • Transport patients and assist with lifting patients for procedures, and assemble surgical specialty beds with correct attachments to ensure patient safety.
  • Complete necessary arrangements to set up the operating room prior to surgical procedures, laying out instruments, surgical trays, and assembling equipment as required.
  • Verify package integrity and external sterile indicators prior to opening and internal sterile indicators prior to use of supplies and instruments.
  • Handle controlled and non-controlled medications, prepare medication for use during surgery, and label all fluids on the sterile field.
  • Coordinate with vendors, surgeons, and other departments, and assist with ordering of specialty items and equipment recalls.
  • Maintain and ensure operational readiness of instruments and equipment, departmental supplies, and sterilized items, and check for outdated supplies.
  • Operate a variety of equipment as directed, check for outdated equipment, and ensure and maintain competency on all new equipment and technology.
  • Maintain sterility of the surgical field by continuous observation of staff and equipment, sterilize needed instruments with rapid cycle sterilization, and contain used sharps on the sterile field in a designated disposable, puncture-resistant needle container.
  • Prepare and handle patient specimens, assure proper labeling of patient and all specimens, and comply with Standard Precautions (Blood Borne Pathogen standards) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provide guidance throughout the case for physician assistants, medical students, registered nurses, orthopedic technicians, and surgeons on the use of equipment, and perform patient care functions such as patient prepping, positioning patient, and holding patient during surgical case.
  • Maintain specialty carts for each service, test and calibrate any and all equipment as needed, and stock rooms daily.
  • Assist team members with gowning and gloving, help in a Circulator role and Anesthesia Tech role, and assist Anesthesia with spinals, leads, blood vials, medications, and removal of airway stylet.
  • During a code, assist surgeon, RN, and Anesthesia in any way qualified, and clean the operating room after surgical procedures by removing and disposing of contaminated instruments, disassembling instruments for sterilization as required, and inspecting the used surgical setup for sharps.
  • Ability to read and understand medical terminology and pathology, and assist with orientation, education, and inservices as requested by management and co-workers.
  • Required to participate in call and standby, and perform other duties as required within the classification.

Basic Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum Qualifications: Two (2) years of Operating Room scrub or military equivalent experience within the last three (3) years and competency scrubbing for a variety of surgical procedures.

  • National Center for Competency Testing Certificate - Technologist in Surgery from National Center for Competency Testing OR Surgical Technologist Certificate from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
  • Basic Life Support

Notes

This is a temporary position for approximately six (6) months. OMC/OVASC, STB/Call and Weekend rotation. May be filled by Surgical Tech I or Surgical Tech II.
