Job Summary

The YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids is seeking a qualified Swim Instructor to conduct swimming instruction using the National Aquatic YMCA Programs. The successful candidate will ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for children and adults to interact and learn.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach aquatic skills to participants of all ages and skill levels
  • Follow prepared lesson plans and maintain teaching equipment
  • Supervise participants during swimming lessons and maintain a safe environment
  • Distribute and collect program evaluations to ensure high-quality instruction
  • Implement Character Development in all programs to promote positive values and behaviors
  • Handle parent/member complaints in a professional and respectful manner
  • Maintain all areas in clean, presentable fashion and ensure pool and deck equipment are in good working order
  • Enforce safety standards and follow emergency procedures as needed
  • Ensure State of Michigan's Department of Health requirements are met
Requirements
  • Six months to one year of recreation, lifeguard, swim instructor, or water park experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required
  • Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles
  • Ability to demonstrate aquatic skills and react quickly to emergency situations
  • At least sixteen years of age or older
  • YMCA experience preferred
Certifications and Licenses
  • Swim Instructor Certification required (provided by the YMCA)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for rescue required
  • First Aid Certification required within the first 60 days
  • AED-Oxygen Certification required within the first 60 days
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training
  • State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)
