About the Role

As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for supporting the Director of Tax in managing state tobacco tax reporting for our US distribution company, B2C ecommerce business, and US Retail Tobacco shops. Additionally, you will handle state sales tax reporting for our B2C ecommerce business and US Retail entities.

This role involves excise tax compliance, which requires a high level of analytical and organizational skills to ensure accuracy and timeliness in reporting. Your ability to identify errors, determine causes of inconsistencies, and collaborate with software providers to resolve issues will be crucial in this position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and file state tobacco tax reports via the state tax portal(s) after verifying their accuracy.
  • Work closely with industry legal counsel and tax advocates to stay updated on current developments affecting remote sellers.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of state sales tax returns for remote sales.
  • Analyze and resolve discrepancies in tax reports, working with software providers to implement solutions.
  • PARTICIPATE IN MONTHLY INDUSTRY CALLS WITH INDUSTRY LEGAL COUNSEL AND TAX ADVOCATES WHO WORK DIRECTLY WITH FEDERATION OF TAX ADMINISTRATORS (FTA) TO LEARN OF CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS FOR REMOTE SELLERS OF OUR PRODUCT.

We are seeking a highly skilled professional with a strong background in excise tax compliance, preferably with experience in SAP, Avalara, or other 3rd party excise tax software providers.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with at least 5 years of experience in accounting/tax compliance, preferably with a public accounting firm, a state tax department, and/or a US company.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with progressively increasing responsibilities, including experience with excise tax software and industry-specific regulations.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

The estimated salary for this position is $90,000 - $120,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
