Job Summary

The Pharmacy Support Specialist will provide critical support to the pharmacist in delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care to patients. This role requires a strong understanding of federal and state laws and regulations related to medication management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of medication activity, including purchasing, inventory, preparation, distribution, administration, charging, waste, and return.
  • Prepare and dispense medications and sterile products, including hazardous drugs, in a safe and timely manner.
  • Clean and maintain pharmacy equipment, utensils, and work areas to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Perform routine inspections of medication areas to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Deliver and restock medications and related supplies to patient care areas in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Manage Automated Dispensing Devices and maintain operational knowledge to accurately refill and manage inventory.
  • Document all medication transactions and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Report any potential or suspected medication diversion to management immediately.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a patient-focused approach in all interactions.
  • Gather patients' medication history through direct interaction with patients, families, retail pharmacies, and other healthcare providers.
  • Adhere to posted schedules, which may include overtime, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts.
  • Engage in organizational and departmental initiatives, attend meetings, and complete learning requirements as assigned.
  • Maintain current licensure and certification as required and develop skills relevant to providing high-quality patient care and regulatory compliance.
  • Report regulatory deficiencies and supporting evidence to management promptly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management or supervising pharmacists, including hazardous medication transport to other departments or locations.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of pharmacy technician training program with sterile compounding didactic and practical training highly preferred.
  • Twelve months of prior hospital experience preferred, with prior experience in sterile compounding, including hazardous drugs, highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy purchasing, including 340B, highly preferred.
  • Current Washington State Pharmacy Technician certification required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health Career Association (NHA) Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred.
  • Current Washington State Driver's License and automobile liability insurance required if transporting medication.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Office applications to perform work.
  • Well-developed problem-solving and analytical skills required.
  • Ability to prioritize workload amidst frequent interruptions and competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare environment required.
  • Operational knowledge of Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) preferred.
Work Environment

The Pharmacy Support Specialist will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and competing priorities. The role requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching, with the ability to lift or move objects up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus under stress or time constraints.
