Position Overview
The Epidemiology and Risk Modelling division at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science is a globally acknowledged collective of risk analysts, modellers, and epidemiologists dedicated to delivering high-quality scientific insights for policy development and outbreak management. This team excels in modelling and quantitative risk assessment to effectively identify, manage, and mitigate incidents and outbreaks of both endemic and exotic aquatic diseases and pests, in addition to non-native species incursions. Our unique capabilities provide essential evidence for the UK government, complemented by our responsibilities as an international reference centre. We are committed to promoting the sustainability and safety of aquatic ecosystems and are in search of two highly skilled and motivated professionals to enhance our team in developing risk management strategies. You will have the chance to collaborate with national and international scientists, stakeholders, and policymakers to design, develop, and lead quantitative and qualitative risk assessment initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Your primary duties will encompass, but are not limited to:
- Formulating and implementing suitable qualitative or quantitative risk assessment methodologies and mathematical models addressing national and international risks associated with aquatic animal diseases and non-native species incursions.
- Leading and executing research initiatives focused on modelling infectious disease outbreaks, evaluating ecosystem repercussions, and assessing the potential impacts of climate change on species and disease prevalence.
- Contributing to qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for policy and trade discussions, as well as investigations related to outbreaks and incursions. You will analyze data, interpret findings to evaluate risks, and communicate results through reports, presentations, and publications that lead to actionable recommendations. You will promote our scientific findings by authoring impactful reports and articles in peer-reviewed journals, while also representing the Centre at national and international conferences.
- Staying abreast of advancements in risk modelling techniques and participating in professional development and training opportunities. Ensure that risk assessments are at the forefront of methodological innovations, particularly within the fields of epidemiology and aquatic animal health. You will also lead project proposals to secure funding from various organizations.
- Ensuring the successful delivery of projects, advising policymakers on the outcomes of these projects, and providing consultancy services at both national and international levels.
Qualifications
The following criteria are essential for this role, and you must demonstrate your skills and experience in these areas:
- Strong foundation in mathematical modelling and statistical analysis, including proficiency in at least one programming language, such as R or Python.
- Understanding of regulatory frameworks and policies related to aquatic animal health.
- Established expertise in infectious disease modelling and/or risk assessment, evidenced by a publication record in international journals.
- Familiarity with ecological, statistical, and/or computational modelling techniques.
- Experience in developing risk management strategies and policies, including qualitative risk assessments necessary for outbreak, incursion, or trade negotiations.
- Expertise in advising decision-makers on risk models and providing consultancy on risk assessments.
- Experience in crafting successful funding proposals.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Postgraduate degree in Mathematics or Biological Sciences with a focus on modelling and statistical analysis, or the ability to demonstrate meeting all essential criteria outlined in this specification.
Benefits
In addition to a competitive salary, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Other benefits include:
- Generous annual leave entitlement, starting at 25 days (increasing to 30 days over the first five years) for full-time new entrants to the Civil Service, plus 8 public holidays and an additional day for the King's birthday.
- Access to tailored learning and development opportunities.
- A supportive working environment that offers a variety of flexible working options.
- A culture that encourages inclusion and diversity.
- Eligibility to join the Civil Service Pension scheme.
- Staff recognition programs and in-year award schemes.
