About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Fitness Instructor to lead our group exercise classes at the Akron Area YMCA. As a Fitness Instructor, you will be responsible for creating a safe and engaging environment for our members to achieve their fitness goals.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Class Instruction: Instruct fitness classes in compliance with YMCA standards, having prepared class plans accordingly.
  2. Member Engagement: Build effective, authentic relationships with participants; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  3. Professional Development: Acquire necessary CEC's to remain certified.
  4. Safety and Emergency Procedures: Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  5. Class Preparation: Emphasize safety and proper technique during class workouts.
  6. Equipment Management: Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  7. Communication and Teamwork: Attend program/staff meetings and workshops as scheduled. Assist with special events as scheduled including the Annual Campaign and other fundraising events.
  8. Program Promotion: Understand, discuss and promote all YMCA programs.
  9. Work Environment: Maintain clean and safe work environment.

Qualifications
  1. Certifications: Basic CPR, AED, First Aid and New Leader Orientation within 90 days of hire.
  2. YMCA Certification: YMCA Group Exercise Instructor Certification or equivalent within 90 days of hire.
  3. Continuing Education: Keep all certifications current.
  4. Age Requirement: At least 18 years of age.

  2. Communication Skills: Must be able to explain proper form, safety and techniques with all equipment.
  3. Public Speaking: Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate to groups of varied age, size and ability.
  4. Physical Demands: May be required to perform frequent amounts of but not limited to: bending, sitting, standing, reaching, kneeling, lifting and moving objects/equipment.
  5. Visual and Auditory Ability: Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  6. Lifting Ability: Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  7. Cardiovascular Ability: Must be able to participate in high cardiovascular activities for up to 45 minutes continuously.
  8. Exposure to Bodily Fluids: May have infrequent contact with bodily fluids of others (i.e. sweat, blood, etc...).
  9. Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment can be moderate to loud.
