Job Summary:

The Surgical Technician is responsible for preparing the operating room by sterilizing and setting up equipment for procedures. This role involves assembling and testing equipment, handling instruments and supplies, and anticipating the needs of surgeons during procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Anticipate and request special equipment and supplies from the circulating nurse.
  • Verify that instruments and equipment are in safe working order.
  • Display knowledge of instrument, supply, and equipment care and handling.
  • Maintain a safe patient care environment within the OR suite.
  • Monitor and maintain the integrity of sterile goods.
  • Anticipate and meet the needs of surgeons by passing instruments and supplies during procedures.
  • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures.
  • Handle medications, haemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions as dispensed by a Registered Nurse for surgeon use.

Requirements:

Education Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited surgical technician program or equivalent from an accredited school is required.
  • Certification (CST) required within 1 year of program completion.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year work experience as a surgical technician is required.
  • Experience in Ambulatory Surgery or Outpatient Surgery preferred.
  • Experience scrubbing in on variety of cases (orthopaedic, plastics, general, and urology) preferred.

Certifications:

  • Currently holds American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or AHA approved equivalent (or obtains within three (3) months of hire).
