Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Maintenance Worker Apprentice to join our team at the County of Santa Barbara, CA. As a Maintenance Worker Apprentice, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop skills in various aspects of maintenance work, including road construction, maintenance, and repair, as well as traffic maintenance and flood control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn and perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, traffic, flood control, waste-handling, wastewater systems, and other public works facilities.
  • Operate light equipment, including forklifts, highlifts, tractor mowers, and chippers, and learn to safely tie down material loads on trailers.
  • Learn to use hand and power tools, including lutes, tampers, chain saws, jack hammers, concrete saws, vibra plates, weed wackers, air pressure guns, paint mixers and sprayers, bott-dot, and thermoplastic machines.
  • Apply MUTCD work zone traffic control guidelines at work sites on and adjacent to roadways, set up signs, cones, and barriers to notify motorists of detours, flag vehicular traffic, and direct pedestrian traffic away from hazardous areas.
  • Drive County vehicles, including pick-ups, dump trucks, stake-beds, water trucks, spray rigs, flushing trucks, bobtails, paint stripers, and video vans, to/from, and at work sites.
Requirements
  • A valid Driver's License is required at the time of application.
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License is required at the time of appointment.
  • Appointees must obtain a California Class A Commercial Driver's License prior to completion of probationary period (12 months), as a condition of continued employment with no Restrictions such as: (L) - No Air Brake equipped CMV, or (E) - No Manuel Transmission/Automatic Transmission Only.
Working Conditions

Incumbents in this classification may be exposed to a variety of hazardous and/or unpleasant field conditions, including wet, rainy, cold, or hot weather, poison oak, traffic, exhaust fumes, trash or sewage, and exposure to chemicals. Performing the essential functions of this classification requires various types of physical exertion, such as prolonged bending, stooping, and lifting, walking on uneven terrain, such as road shoulders and creek beds, and driving vehicles and/or equipment for long periods of time.
