Rodent Veterinary Technician

The Johns Hopkins University is currently looking for a dedicated professional to join the Research Animal Resources (RAR) team. This role is crucial in supporting the university's animal research initiatives, providing essential veterinary care and research services for rodents and other small animals involved in various studies, including those related to Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL-3) containment, such as COVID-19 research. This position plays a vital role in establishing comprehensive animal modeling and veterinary services for the Principal Investigators at Hopkins.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage rodent breeding colonies and provide technical assistance to researchers and veterinarians, including tasks such as identifying animals (ear tagging, ear notching), setting up breeding environments, and weaning procedures. Collect and submit biological samples, including tail tips or ear punches for genotyping.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records of pedigree, births, deaths, weaned animals, and other relevant data.
  • Conduct cross-foster rederivation as required.
  • Provide technical support for research experiments, including routine rodent biomedical procedures such as blood collection, injections, oral gavage, euthanasia, and tissue harvesting. Perform survival surgical procedures and assist with other animal handling tasks, including working with infectious agents like SARS-CoV-2, while acting as a liaison between researchers and RAR.
  • Handle administrative tasks, including recordkeeping using Excel, Word, and other platforms.
  • Maintain detailed records of time and procedures for billing purposes.
  • Generate weekly reports for investigators and veterinarians regarding colony status.
  • Oversee the ordering of animals and supplies.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment.
  • Manage inventory of samples, inoculums, and supplies.
  • Collaborate with husbandry staff to ensure proper animal care.
  • Assist in training researchers on relevant procedures.
  • Help maintain equipment such as isoflurane gas machines.
  • Adhere to safety protocols for all personnel in the facility.
  • Follow and assist in implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), guidelines, and related documentation.
  • Uphold strict infection control measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the veterinarian.
  • Independently respond to and manage clinical inquiries.
  • Consult with veterinarians as needed for clinical case management.
  • Conduct diagnostic laboratory techniques, including in-house parasitology and basic microscopy.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proven experience with MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent recordkeeping capabilities and proficiency in computer applications, including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently while being a collaborative team player, with the capacity to cross-train with other veterinary technicians for coverage as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Reach and extend hands or arms in various directions.
  • Dexterity in fingers and hands for animal restraint and manipulation.
  • Significant standing and walking required.
  • Capability to lift up to 10 lbs.
  • Frequent use of a computer.
  • Adequate vision to work with animals and perform tasks effectively.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for animal housing, particularly a PAPR.
  • No allergies to rodents such as mice and rats.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of experience in laboratory animal science or animal research, particularly with rodents.
  • Additional education may be considered in lieu of required experience, as per the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in managing rodent breeding colonies.
  • Familiarity with rodent biomedical methodologies.
  • Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, or Biology.
  • Bachelor's Degree.

Education and Experience Equivalency
