Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Veterinary Technician to join our Research Animal Resources team at Johns Hopkins University. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing top-notch care and support for our rodent research programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and maintain rodent breeding colonies, including breeding cage setup, animal identification, and data recording.
  • Provide technical support for research experiments, including blood collection, injections, and euthanasia.
  • Perform routine rodent bio-methodology, such as oral gavage and tissue harvest.
  • Assist with animal procedures, including working with infectious agents.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports, including time and procedure records, and weekly colony reports.
  • Order animals and supplies, and perform equipment maintenance.
  • Coordinate with husbandry personnel to ensure animal care and welfare.
  • Train researchers and assist with equipment maintenance.
  • Follow safety protocols and implement SOPs and guidelines.
  • Perform diagnostic lab techniques, such as in-house parasitology and basic microscopy.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in laboratory animal science or animal research, preferably working with rodents.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience.
  • Experience in rodent breeding colony management and bio-methodology is highly desirable.
Working Conditions

The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced research environment, with frequent interactions with researchers, veterinarians, and other animal care staff. The position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
