This role is situated within the College of Nursing (CoN) and reports directly to the Program Director. The position encompasses both teaching and service responsibilities. We define teaching as the creation of environments that facilitate student learning and achievement of desired outcomes at both course and program levels. Service involves utilizing academic and professional expertise to contribute to the University, the nursing profession, and the community. This includes engaging in meaningful activities that enhance the image, mission, or strategic priorities of the University, as well as supporting the professional development of faculty.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching (92%):
- Foster a dynamic, learner-centered environment utilizing diverse teaching methodologies that cater to the varied learning needs of students, grounded in educational theory and evidence-based practices.
- Exemplify reflective and critical thinking while serving as a mentor and coach for students; engage in discussions regarding their progress and assist in formulating learning plans to achieve course objectives.
- Maintain and enhance expertise in the subjects taught.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure course integrity across programs and curricula.
- Prepare and evaluate written assessments, projects, and student submissions.
- Alert the Course Manager regarding at-risk students and any clinical site concerns.
- Oversee or instruct clinical rotations as necessary in various healthcare settings.
- Document student progress accurately.
- Instructional assignments may be distributed across multiple campuses.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Engage in Faculty Organization meetings.
- Participate in College of Nursing Faculty meetings.
- Contribute to University or College committees as required.
- Provide service to the nursing profession and the community.
- Attend University and CoN events as outlined in attendance expectations.
- Clarify nursing curriculum and programmatic requirements for students.
- Offer guidance to students for informed academic decision-making.
- Enhance student awareness of available educational resources.
- Discuss student academic progress and goals.
- Refer students to institutional and community support services as appropriate.
- Communicate relevant student information that may influence policy development within the CoN and improve the learning environment.
Regular, 12-month faculty appointments consist of 1722 instructional hours and 150 service hours, totaling 1872 hours.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Master's degree in nursing required; doctorate in nursing or a related field preferred.
- Preferred teaching experience with diverse student populations at the baccalaureate level or higher.
- Rank is determined based on qualifications and experience.
- Unencumbered California registered nurse license or eligibility for licensure in California.
- Preferred experience collaborating with leadership in healthcare and academic institutions.
- Must meet qualifications to teach relevant coursework per California BRN standards.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to produce clear and concise documentation.
- Effectively collaborate as part of a team and work independently.
- Articulate ideas effectively through spoken communication in person or via phone.
- Comprehend detailed information through verbal and written communication.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to the principles of caring science and mindfulness-based practices.
- Exhibit ethical and professional behavior alongside expert communication skills.
- Align with the mission, vision, and values of the program, school of nursing, and university.
- Maintain a clear focus on ensuring safety and quality in student learning activities.

Samuel Merritt University provides base salary ranges for all positions based on local requirements. Individual compensation will be determined by various relevant factors, including qualifications, geographic location, and other pertinent skills.
