Emergency Medical Technicians play a crucial role in managing the Emergency Department's workflow, particularly during squad calls, patient care, and initial assessments upon arrival.

As an Emergency Medical Technician, your responsibilities will include assisting Registered Nurses with triage and patient evaluations, taking vital signs and lab samples, performing EKGs, transporting patients, managing EMS communications, documenting data for Emergency Medicine physicians, and overseeing EMS teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Primarily responsible for managing EMS communications and documenting data for the Emergency Medicine physician while supervising EMS teams. Taking and recording vital signs. Assisting Registered Nurses with triage and patient evaluations.
  • Providing first aid treatments, including:

Controlling bleeding, bandaging, splinting, and cleansing wounds. Preparing patients for examinations by undressing, cleansing, or draping them. Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and potential endotracheal intubation as necessary. Monitoring patients and applying EKG leads.

Answering phone calls related to nursing, office inquiries, or nursing home facilities. Cleaning and maintaining EMS equipment. Initiating intravenous lines and/or drawing blood.

Documenting in Emergency Department records. May initiate triage and assessment of incoming EMS patients and report findings to a Registered Nurse. Performing various supportive tasks, including clerical duties and research activities. Completing mandatory training to maintain specific competencies and certifications.

Maintaining required certifications and licenses.



  • Additional duties as assigned.
    Education:
+ High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited Basic EMT course. Completion of a course approved by the Ohio State Board of Regents for Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.

Certifications:
+ Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in Ohio. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred. National registration or eligibility to take the exam.
