Physical Substation Group Lead

Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Physical Substation Group Lead to oversee the design of deliverables associated with substation physical/outdoor design projects. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing a small team of engineers, designers, and/or drafters who create substation engineering packages utilizing MicroStation, AutoCAD, and Inventor.
Key Responsibilities- Manage a small team of individual contributors (2-5 team members) to ensure successful project delivery.
- Oversee assigned Physical projects to meet schedule and budget requirements while producing high-quality design products.
- Produce all engineering deliverables with a high level of quality, ensuring compliance with company standards and industry best practices.
- Provide detailed checking (QA/QC) of all engineering deliverables to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Implement and maintain Mesa's quality assurance plan on all projects to ensure a base level of quality is maintained.
- Perform occasional site visits as needed, typically less than 5% annually.
- Perform and oversee scoping of various proposed substation upgrades to ensure feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
- Mentor direct reports, teaching them the nuances of Substation Physical engineering and design.
- Coordinate design activities with other disciplines as required to establish a complete design package.
- Perform or check supporting calculations (Grounding, Lighting, AC/DC, and Lightning Protection) to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assist project or program managers in estimating projects and developing scope of work for assigned projects.
- Identify training needs for staff and budget, plan, coordinate, and conduct training as required.
- Evaluate work performance of personnel and provide feedback to direct supervision.
The selected candidate is expected to report to the Knoxville, TN office on a full-time basis. Consideration will also be given to reporting to our Chattanooga, TN office with periodic travel to the Knoxville office. After establishing a satisfactory work history, there will be an option for a hybrid in-office/remote work arrangement.
