Cytology Specialist

POSITION OVERVIEW
This role is essential in identifying malignant and pre-malignant conditions through the analysis of body fluids, contributing significantly to the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Upon receiving gynecological specimens, the specialist is tasked with assigning an accession number and ensuring accurate data entry into the laboratory information system.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Staining and coverslipping all gynecological and non-gynecological slides.
2. Maintaining the setup for gynecological and non-gynecological staining processes.
3. Regularly changing, rotating, and filtering solutions as necessary.
4. Documenting quality control measures for staining on a monthly basis.
5. Preparing Saccomanno Cytology Fixative and graded alcohols as required.
6. Managing supplies for the OB-GYN office and keeping records of outgoing materials.
7. Conducting STAT testing within established turnaround times and providing timely information regarding patient test results as needed.
8. Upholding a high standard of confidentiality in all aspects of work.
EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Cytotechnology Science is required.
Certification as a Cytotechnologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an equivalent certification is mandatory.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is situated within a professional medical laboratory setting.
Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and potential contact with blood and body fluids is expected.
Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and radiation risks may occur.
The noise level in the laboratory is typically moderate.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting).
Frequent movement and walking are necessary.
Regular operation of computers and laboratory equipment is required.
Fine motor skills are essential for handling and operating various instruments and devices.
Effective communication with physicians and other healthcare team members is crucial, necessitating good hearing and speaking abilities.
