Intake Counselor Job Description

Abraxas Youth & Family Services is seeking a skilled Intake Counselor to join our team. As an Intake Counselor, you will play a vital role in helping individuals struggling with substance abuse issues gain control of their lives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Respond to inquiries about our facility in a timely manner.
  • Develop therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
  • Perform benefit eligibility checks to ensure patients have active benefits at the time of admission.
  • Collaborate with medical and psychiatric personnel to ensure appropriate recommendations for referrals.
  • Coordinate admission and transfer processes between levels of care.
  • Maintain knowledge of milieu management principles.
  • Communicate projected admissions to internal representatives promptly.
  • Ensure all clinical information from referral sources or patients is received prior to admission.
  • Schedule and complete pre-admission assessments, consult with the admitting physician, and communicate disposition recommendations to patients or their families.
  • Possess skill in preparing and maintaining accurate medical record documentation.
  • Complete initial pre-authorization for treatment and admission prior to admission, when possible.
  • Admit patients in the registration and accounting system, complete admission and consent forms, and demonstrate a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude towards customers.
Requirements:
  • Current licensure as a CADC, LPC, or LSW/LCPC/LCSW.
  • Two years of experience working with substance abuse, preferred.
  • Two years of social service management experience, preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise discretion in making decisions.
  • Ability to promote positive behavior and manage resistant behavior.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license from the employee's state of residence.
  • Ability to work with computers and necessary software.
