Job Summary

The University of Iowa is seeking a skilled Automotive Technician to join our team in the Parking & Transportation department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing vehicles with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic problems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform vehicle repairs and maintenance
  • Troubleshoot vehicle electrical and mechanical problems
  • Test drive vehicles to ensure safety and performance
  • Use diagnostic equipment to identify and repair issues
  • Enter data on computer systems to track vehicle maintenance and repairs
  • Perform annual inspections on department-owned vehicles
  • Put new vehicles in service and take them out of service as needed
  • Research technical publications to stay up-to-date on industry developments
  • Perform road service calls to assist with vehicle breakdowns
Requirements
  • Four years' experience in the trade, including apprenticeship and/or vocational training
  • Possess or obtain within 60 days of employment a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with necessary endorsements
  • Possess or obtain within 6 months the necessary refrigeration license required for repairing vehicle AC systems
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Possess and maintain separate ASE Certifications in Light-Duty/Automotive and Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Series
  • Meet the institutional standards for motor vehicle driving record history and related safety policies
  • Participate in the required Federal drug and alcohol-testing program for safety-sensitive employees
  • Pass the required DOT/FTA pre-employment drug test for safety-sensitive employees
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an automotive/heavy-duty vehicle repair shop
  • Experience in automotive electronic troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of current automotive technologies
  • Experience working in an environment with a database work order system
  • Work experience involving service calls in all weather
  • Job relevant computer experience
  • EPA Refrigerant certification
  • ASE or other professional certifications
