Job Overview

The Mental Health Specialist position at Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools is a 10-month role that involves advancing school-based mental health awareness, quality prevention, intervention, evaluation, and support. The ideal candidate will collaborate with school teams, families, teachers, and staff to promote access to mental health care, enhance the school climate, and provide technical assistance and training activities.

Salary and Benefits

This position offers a salary in accordance with certification and placement on the state's adopted salary schedule for certified staff. Full benefits are also included. To be eligible, applicants must hold North Carolina certification or eligibility for certification in School Social Work, School Psychology, or Counseling. A Master's degree (MA, MSW) and clinical license are also required, along with minimum three years of experience in related areas of public health or mental health.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will coordinate with school teams to promote access to mental health care. This includes creating and maintaining coordination through the standardization of a comprehensive mental health delivery of services. Key responsibilities include:
  1. Enhancing the school climate and promoting mental health wellness, early identification of needs.
  2. Creating space for family involvement and engagement.
  3. Assisting in the identification and delivery of a range of evidence-based prevention to intense interventions.
  4. Developing program evaluation and data collection for efficacy and effectiveness of services.
  5. Communicating extensively and providing consultation, mental health education, and prevention information to staff, students, families, and school community.

Service Facilitation

The Mental Health Specialist will provide mental health-related support services to school teams and leadership teams. This includes case consultation and feedback to school problem-solving teams concerning needs of families and children. The specialist will also collaborate and assist with and provide oversight of public and private agencies to offer access to mental health services and programs on the school campus for students and their families. Additionally, they will assist in the coordination of a school-wide system of intervention, including implementation of a comprehensive mental health plan.

Training and Professional Development

The successful candidate will assess training needs of school teachers/staff in conjunction with the administrative team, co-located mental health, and design, coordinate, and deliver professional development related to emotional and interfering behavioral concerns in adolescents. They will also emphasize ongoing coaching and support for the implementation of the most effective evidence-based interventions for disorders.
