Job Overview

ABOUT SANCTUARY FOR FAMILIES INC.

Sanctuary for Families is a premier service provider and advocate for individuals affected by domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender-based violence. Our organization empowers countless adults and children annually to transition from fear and abuse to safety and stability through a comprehensive suite of services. We offer a variety of wrap-around services aimed at helping survivors rebuild their lives post-abuse, while also striving to eradicate gender violence through three primary strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are accessible across multiple locations.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Summer Camp Facilitator will play a vital role in supporting the Camp HOPE New York model, which is a trauma-informed program designed for campers who have experienced gender-based violence and related trauma. Staff members working with this population should be empathetic, nurturing, and knowledgeable about the effects of trauma on individuals. General Counselors will be responsible for fostering a positive environment for campers in our summer camp by demonstrating positive behaviors, offering guidance, and identifying any potential challenges. This is an overnight camp experience set in a rustic environment, where counselors will reside in cabins with a small group of teen campers.

Camp Counselors will report directly to the Head Counselor.

  • Maintain good health practices and present a positive personal image.
  • Keep detailed records on each camper to assess their needs, goals, and progress throughout their camp experience.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in following emergency protocols.
  • Dedicate time to meet the campers' needs, challenge their abilities, and serve as a positive role model.
  • Participate in daily morning meetings.
  • Adhere to additional rules and regulations as set forth by the Camp Director.
  • Collaborate effectively with fellow staff to achieve program objectives.
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance and care of camp facilities and equipment.
  • Engage in camp activities with campers, including hiking, arts & crafts, talent shows, swimming, and more.
  • Manage challenging situations appropriately in a dynamic, interactive environment with support from Camp HOPE Leadership staff.
  • Ensure timely management of group activities and meals.
  • Work collaboratively with a co-counselor to support the needs of campers in your cabin.
  • Communicate successes, concerns, and observations regarding campers to Camp HOPE NY Leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma; 1 or 2 years of college education preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in camping and supervising children or completion of an acceptable training program.
  • Willingness to work under supervision to meet organizational goals.
  • Passionate about working with youth.
  • Interest in outdoor living and activities during the summer.
  • Emotionally mature and able to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining a positive outlook.
  • Flexible and open to new challenges and experiences.
