Mission: The aim of Correctional Managed Care is to fulfill the healthcare requirements of underserved patient demographics within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Physician II is responsible for delivering expert medical services related to the diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients and employees who have sustained injuries during TDCJ-ID work-related activities. This role ensures that inmates receive timely and accessible healthcare. The physician makes final medical decisions regarding the care provided to inmates in accordance with Health Services Policies and Procedures. Additionally, this position directs all Health Services operations within the unit and holds ultimate accountability for all Health Services personnel assigned to the unit. The role operates under the general guidance of the Regional Physician, allowing for significant initiative and independent judgment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts comprehensive medical histories and examinations; formulates clinical impressions based on findings; orders diagnostic tests, interprets laboratory and radiological results, prescribes medications, and provides treatments aligned with clinical impressions.
  • Reviews, completes, and analyzes medical records; assigns, evaluates, and updates medical classifications; documents admission notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries, and conducts rounds on patients admitted to infirmaries or regional medical facilities.
  • Refers patients to specialists for further consultations, evaluations, and treatments.
  • Participates in a rotation with other physicians to deliver after-hours and weekend patient care.
  • Supervises all physicians and mid-level practitioners directly.
  • Oversees and manages all operations of the unit's medical department, ensuring adherence to all relevant standards, regulations, policies, procedures, and court orders.
  • Follows internal controls and reporting structures established for the department.
  • Performs additional duties as necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is situated within a correctional facility, requiring security clearance and pre-employment drug testing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid license to practice medicine issued by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Must have a current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration for controlled substances.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
