Evening shifts available from 2pm to 10pm or 3pm to 11pm.

The Specimen Processing Technician will report directly to the Laboratory Supervisor and will be tasked with the reception and accessioning of surgical and urine specimens into the Anatomic Pathology or Clinical Pathology information systems.
This role is crucial as it initiates all laboratory operations that flow through our facility. Responsibilities include sorting samples according to insurance and case type, dispatching samples that are not accepted, and ensuring timely accessioning of all patient samples that can be processed in-house for efficient overnight processing.
Additionally, this position involves customer service duties in the afternoons prior to sample arrival, including handling patient-generated slide requests for external consultations, preparing genomic testing for dispatch, and maintaining chain of custody logs for all samples exiting the laboratory.
During downtime, clerical tasks such as answering calls from medical offices, organizing paperwork, and filing slides will also be part of the role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Receiving and logging specimens into the AP/CP information systems.
  • Evaluating the quality and suitability of received specimens and taking necessary actions under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Maintaining organized and legible records.
  • Ensuring a clean and orderly workspace.
  • Managing supply inventory in the designated area.
  • Participating in required training sessions.
  • Adjusting priorities and workload in response to urgent situations.
  • Adhering to departmental protocols and procedures.
  • Exhibiting flexibility in work hours, including potential weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Demonstrating professionalism through cooperative interactions with colleagues and staff.
  • Upholding our mission and commitment to customer service by following all laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication with physicians and clinical staff regarding specimen-related information.
  • Analytical skills to understand physician requirements.
  • Attention to detail is critical when preparing solutions and handling specimens.
  • Effective communication skills are necessary for professional interactions with management and team members.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions and percentages in practical scenarios.
  • Compliance with all health and safety regulations is mandatory.
  • Adherence to confidentiality standards is required.
Experience in accessioning is preferred. Flexibility in hours is essential, provided that tasks are completed in a timely manner. The ideal candidate will be organized and responsible for maintaining accurate logs and records of samples. A valid driver's license is required, as occasional travel to off-site storage may be necessary.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of one year of laboratory experience is preferred.
