Position Summary
As a Special Education Teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing accommodations for students with diverse learning needs. You will advocate for these students, believing that tailored instruction and related services are vital for their academic success. Your responsibilities will include providing academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations for all learners.
Key Responsibilities
1. Instructional Duties
- Adapt and differentiate an inclusive curriculum that values diversity.
- Collaborate with families and Special Education teams to create 504 Plans and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that ensure appropriate accommodations.
- Foster an inclusive and secure environment that empowers students to become independent learners.
2. Special Education Responsibilities
- Work alongside general education teachers and school leaders to analyze student performance and ensure adherence to IEPs.
- Collect data on academic progress and prepare goals for annual IEP meetings.
- Deliver instruction through various methods, including small group and one-on-one sessions, while implementing strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
3. Cultivating School Culture
- Establish positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and understood.
- Engage with families to provide necessary resources that support their child's educational journey.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, mentorship, and coaching.
- Contribute to weekly school-wide meetings to foster community, model core values, and promote student achievement.
- Collaborate with your grade-level team to set academic goals and refine instructional techniques.

- Required Experience:
- Experience in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years preferred).
- Academic background in Special Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. While certification is not mandatory for hiring, candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements and enroll in a teacher preparation program if they do not hold a degree in education.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position in Rochester ranges from $50,000 to $64,700, based on various factors including relevant experience, education, certifications, and tenure.
