Heavy Equipment Operator

Custer County is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. As a key member of our Highway Department, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of heavy equipment, including trucks, loaders, and graders, to ensure the safe and efficient maintenance of our county roads.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain heavy equipment, including trucks, loaders, and graders, to perform road maintenance tasks.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on equipment to ensure optimal performance and extend equipment life.
- Conduct safety inspections of equipment and report any issues or concerns to supervisors.
- Collaborate with other department staff to ensure effective and efficient road maintenance operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to support the overall goals and objectives of the Highway Department.
- Valid South Dakota Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement.
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment, preferably in a road maintenance or construction setting.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve departmental goals.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy equipment and tools.
This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to changing weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, wind, and precipitation. The incumbent must be able to work safely and effectively in these conditions, as well as be able to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy equipment and tools.
