General Overview of the Role

Responsible for operating sonographic equipment and conducting diagnostic examinations utilizing sonography.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct clinical assessments and perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations.

Examinations may encompass abdominal, vascular, small parts, obstetrics-gynecology, infant head/hip/spine, and interventional procedures.

Adhere to established departmental protocols.

Employ cognitive sonographic skills to identify, document, and modify procedures as necessary based on anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information and images.

Utilize independent judgment during sonographic examinations to accurately distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.

Evaluate sonograms, integrate sonographic data with medical history, and relay findings to the Radiologist.

Ensure the safety and comfort of patients during their time in the sonographer's care.


Effectively communicate with patients and the healthcare team, acknowledging the unique nature of sonographic examinations and the needs of patients.

Assist with the daily operations of the ultrasound department.

Accurately complete exam tracking and billing on a daily basis.

Maintain ultrasound equipment and workspaces, ensuring adequate supplies are available.

Foster and maintain productive ethical relationships with colleagues, referring providers, and commercial entities.

Perform additional work-related duties as assigned.

Demonstrate proficiency in ultrasound procedures without requiring assistance from fellow sonographers.

Provide guidance and training to existing staff and new sonographers.

Assist in educating new physicians, residents, and fellows on ultrasound technology.

Collaborate with other staff to ensure appropriate patient care is delivered.

Report equipment malfunctions to the relevant supervisor or staff member.

Participate in maintaining laboratory accreditation.

Perform other related duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications

Education

Completion of a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification or currently holds the necessary registry or certification.

Experience

No additional experience required beyond the educational and certification prerequisites.

Level I - Must obtain ARDMS certifications as required by each entity within 18 months of employment.

Level II - Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer.

Level III - Minimum of four years' experience in the specialty modality for promotion consideration.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

ARDMS certification within 18 months of hire.

BLS certification
