Key Responsibilities:


The Senior Surgical Technologist, under the general guidance of the Operating Room Manager, acts as the authority in the domain of surgical technology.

This role includes mentoring fellow technologists, both in specialized areas and as assigned.

The Senior Surgical Technologist is accountable for all duties and competencies outlined in the Surgical Technologist I and II roles, dedicating at least 75% of their work time to these responsibilities, alongside those specified herein.

This position is integral to the leadership team within Perioperative Services, showcasing proficiency in both leadership and technical capabilities.

Clinical / Technical/Financial

Core Duties:

Exhibits a thorough understanding of aseptic principles and ensures the safety of patients and staff during all tasks. Oversees the performance of other Technologists in this capacity and serves as a resource for Registered Nurses as needed. Acts as the clinical and technical authority for instruments, supplies, and equipment in the designated area. Responsible for overseeing the management of the surgical environment to minimize waste of resources.

Provides recommendations to management for cost-saving measures.


Demonstrates advanced skills across all surgical specialties, with particular emphasis on the specialties of the assigned team, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.

Maintains proficiency in scrubbing for all surgical specialties, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.


Capable of instructing in all specialties and serves as a mentor and resource for colleagues, establishing the benchmark for Operating Room Technician skill maintenance as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.

Utilizes prior clinical experience and knowledge to assist fellow technicians in resolving issues and addressing immediate patient care challenges, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.


Drafts and implements new policies or procedures, ensuring compliance with established protocols as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.

Ensures that preference cards are kept current and accurate, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.

Validates the competency of OR personnel in specialized equipment as assigned, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.


Monitors training for Surgical Technologists, recommends call duty assignments, and ensures adequate support for novice personnel during on-call duties, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.


Oversees and promotes the judicious use of supplies and safe equipment handling, guiding other technicians in these practices, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.

In collaboration with the Team Leader, maintains inventory for their specialty area, as assessed through indirect managerial observation.


Adheres to established protocols for acquiring supplies and equipment, serving as a role model and ensuring compliance with these procedures, as evaluated through indirect managerial observation.

Maintains all assigned specialty equipment for the designated team, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.


Collaborates with the Team Leader to identify budgetary needs for surgical specialties, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.


Partners with Team Leaders to evaluate products, supplies, and instruments for efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness, recommending changes as necessary, as assessed through both direct and indirect managerial observation.


Participates in and assists in managing staffing patterns that reflect the variable demands of service, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.

Contributes to the hiring process by interviewing Surgical Technologists and OR Nurses, as evaluated through indirect managerial observation.


Works closely with the Nurse Educator to ensure effective teaching methods are utilized in the training of Surgical Technologists, as assessed through indirect managerial observation.


Keeps educational records current and monitors all Surgical Technologist team members and trainees to ensure that educational records and validations are complete, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.


Attends continuing education programs and routinely offers presentations at in-service sessions, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.

Communicates with patients and colleagues in a manner that protects patient privacy and maintains confidentiality, as evaluated through direct observation and peer feedback.


Adheres to hospital policies, particularly regarding the protection of patient rights and confidentiality, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.


Communicates essential information to supervisors or team leaders in support of unit, departmental, and facility standards and policies, as evaluated through indirect managerial observation.

Demonstrates a commitment to fostering a culture of safety for patients and staff, as assessed through direct observation and peer feedback.

Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed.

Qualifications:

Education:


One of the following is required: Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and possession of a certified surgical technologist credential from a recognized credentialing organization, or....


Completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the U.S. Armed Forces, or ....

Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, or ....


Evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within a specified timeframe; or ....


Service in the federal government, performing duties related to a Surgical Technologist.

Education in an accredited program for licensed practical nursing.

Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a surgical technologist is required.

2 years of material management experience or related experience may substitute for one year of the above requirement.

Licensure/Certifications:
Current Surgical Technologist certification is required.

(Prior employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within a specified timeframe, will waive this requirement); or ....

Licensed as LPN by the relevant state office, required.

BLS certification within a specified timeframe from the date of hire is required.

Salary is determined based on various factors, including qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards.

The above compensation range reflects a good faith belief of the compensation range by Bassett Medical Center at the time of this posting.

USD $34.96/Hr.
