The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in assisting the surgical team with patient care during operations. This position is responsible for delivering technical support in the operating room, ensuring high-quality patient care through proficient technical skills. The technologist performs essential duties related to the scrub role, demonstrating efficiency and precision in all situations while contributing to departmental tasks as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Supply Management: Ensures the availability and functionality of necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment to meet the intra-operative needs of both patients and surgeons.
Aseptic Technique: Utilizes knowledge of surgical asepsis to prepare and open surgical packs, instrument trays, and selected supplies. Monitors the maintenance of aseptic conditions for the surgical team both before and during procedures. Executes gowning, gloving, and draping techniques in accordance with departmental standards, while maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
Surgical Assistance: Assists the surgical team by performing the duties of a surgical assistant under the guidance of the circulating registered nurse during both routine and emergency situations. Provides instruments and supplies to the surgeon and assistant, ensuring that the surgical team's focus remains on the operative field. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team throughout the procedure and demonstrates knowledge of the functionality of surgical instruments.
Communication: Accurately reports the location of drains, implants, grafts, and other items inserted during surgery, ensuring that the circulating registered nurse has all necessary information for documentation in the operating room record.
Patient Safety: Upholds patient safety through proactive measures, adhering to hand hygiene protocols, infection control practices, and emergency response procedures.
Time Management: Effectively follows instructions, organizes multiple tasks, and prioritizes daily responsibilities.
Qualifications:
High school diploma required. Completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist educational program and possession of a certified surgical technologist credential from a recognized credentialing organization is essential. Alternatively, candidates may have completed a surgical technology training program in the military or have relevant experience in a healthcare facility.
