Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, Concussion Clinic

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Medical Director and in collaboration with supervising physicians, this role performs a wide range of clinical tasks to assist in the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform complete admission history and physical exams, and daily notes on assigned clinic and center patients.
  • Evaluate, manage, and treat concussion patients, as well as assist with center patients.
  • Facilitate communication of evaluations with primary care physicians.
  • Develop and initiate the plan of care during the office examination and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals and family members.
  • Perform a complete concussion assessment, including history of all previous concussions, risk factors, and symptoms, as well as current concussion assessment.
  • Differentiate normal test results from abnormal findings, such as neuropsychological test results, MRIs, and CTs.
  • Identify wellness and risk factors, communicate relevant data, and provide complete, accurate written documentation in the patient's medical record.
  • Obtain appropriate authorizations required for all treatments and medication orders.
  • Write and sign preliminary intake assessments and outpatient forms as allowed, including necessary medical care instructions.
  • Provide education and actively involve patients and family members in care.
  • Identify and manage psychological patient issues and refer appropriately.
  • Take patient and family member phone calls and advise as necessary in between patient appointments.
  • Provide appropriate and timely communication with referring physicians and other referring healthcare personnel.
  • Order tests and procedures as indicated.
  • Ensure that treatment plans are individualized based on the family and patient needs.
  • Prescribe medications specific to the patient's diagnosis and level of medication tolerance, in collaboration with or at the direction of the Medical Director and Assistant Medical Director.
  • Meet all guidelines for continuing education/recertification for continued practice in the Department of Surgery at Emerson Hospital.
  • Provide in-service educational seminars to various departments on clinical information related to the program, such as clinical pathways.
  • Update clinical protocols when approved by physicians.
  • Attend monthly office meetings.
  • Assist the Medical Director in educating clinic staff.
  • Assist the Director of the Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies in evaluating patients.
  • Work with area schools, both private and public, in education on concussion.
  • Assess and evaluate concussion patients at area private schools, as directed by the Medical Director.
  • Maintain and support patients' rights to care, privacy, and respect.
Requirements:
  • Education: Completion of a Master's Degree in Nursing and an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
  • Experience: Previous experience with concussion patients, Sports Medicine patients, and neurology patients is strongly preferred.
  • Licensure and/or Certification: Current license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Massachusetts, National certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant, and BLS healthcare provider certification.
  • Skills: Excellent customer service skills, ability to read, write, and communicate in English, computer skills, and ability to maintain confidential information.
