Under direct supervision, engages in tasks of moderate complexity to support the operation of a Preschool or Transitional Kindergarten.
May carry out various classroom assistance and administrative duties; and may offer services to students in a language other than English.
Key Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Supports the educator by facilitating developmentally suitable activities (e.g., literacy, language, science, music, and art) for individual or small groups of children to introduce and/or reinforce educational concepts.
- Aids in the preparation and distribution of teaching materials for student use.
- Maintains classroom tools and workspace to ensure availability of resources and promote a safe and positive learning atmosphere.
- Oversees outdoor activities, such as riding toys, sand play, water activities, or climbing structures, and participates in staff-led games and exercises.
- Assists the educator with record-keeping and assessments.
- Performs cleaning tasks related to activities such as art projects, cooking sessions, student meals, and as needed.
- Accompanies children on educational excursions, providing support for their physical, personal, and emotional needs.
- Supervises student meals and snacks, rest periods, and other necessary activities.
- Provides bathroom assistance in the general education classroom.
- Possesses the stamina and agility to stand, walk, run, sit, squat, bend, crawl, climb, twist, and reach daily to perform various tasks in the classroom and playground.
- Has the strength to lift, move, and/or carry preschool-aged children up to 40 lbs. and various classroom items up to 25 lbs.; hearing ability to engage in normal conversations; visual acuity to read diverse text formats and monitor student activities; clarity of speech to explain educational concepts to children and discuss them with adults; mobility to navigate different locations on campus.
- Requires a minimum of one year of experience working with young children.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with both adults and children; perform a variety of complex tasks; comprehend and execute oral and written instructions; prepare reports as necessary; utilize proper grammar.
- Knowledge of correct language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. State law mandates that all personnel in an instructional setting demonstrate high school proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics. Applicants must pass a proficiency examination to be considered for a position as an Instructional Aide.
- Education requirement includes graduation from high school or equivalent, preferably supplemented by two years of college coursework in child-care specialization or equivalent. Must have completed 6 units in Child Development or be willing to complete within one year of hire.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is highly preferred.
