Mercedes ISD is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Pool-School Nurse Substitute to provide temporary healthcare services to students and staff. As a key member of our school community, you will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive program of health services, promoting health education, and providing direct health services to students.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide temporary, first aid, and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures and doctor's standing orders.
  • Serve as a health advocate for students, notifying parents of accidents or illnesses that occur during school and securing medical care for students in emergency cases.
  • Coordinate a management system to administer medications to students at school, ensuring proper administration, safety, and security of medications, first aid, or health supplies, and campus health equipment.
  • Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy, making appropriate referrals and follow-ups as necessary.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the health program, implementing changes based on findings.
  • Provide health education to individuals and groups, promoting health education and preventive practice for students.
  • Participate in the implementation of the campus health education curriculum, providing health counseling and instruction on an individual or group basis.
  • Serve as a health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community, performing assessments of student problems and making appropriate referrals.
  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, child abuse situations, and school committees, making home visits concerning health problems as necessary with permission of the principal.
  • Communicate regularly with the principal and head nurse regarding health services issues, recommending health accommodation plans for Section 504 or special education students if consulted.
Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program.
  • Valid Registered Nurse's License to practice professional nursing in Texas by the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Certified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct vision and hearing screening (or obtain in the first 3 months).
  • Certified by UTRGV Border Health to conduct Acanthosis Nigricans screening (or obtain in the first 3 months).
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification.
  • Seizure First Aid/Stop the Bleed (or obtain in the first 3 months).
  • Two years nursing experience, preferably in school/public health, nursing home, or hospital setting.
Working Conditions:

Mental demands include the ability to communicate effectively, interpret policies and procedures, and maintain emotional control under stress. Physical demands include following proper body mechanics and procedures for lifting/moving children/adults, with exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
