Job Title: State Advocacy Director

Location: Texas, USA

Estimated Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 per year

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced State Advocacy Director to join our team at the Children's Defense Fund. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing effective public policy advocacy and program strategies to advance child wellbeing in the state of Texas.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Work with the Vice President of Strategy and Program to inform and execute an integrated theory of change that advances child wellbeing in Texas.
  2. Collaborate with the National Director of Movement Building to execute and monitor program plans in Texas and align with the Children's Defense Fund vision.
  3. Lead the coordination of state and local efforts in CDF-Texas to ensure alignment with the Children's Defense Fund's vision and strategy.
  4. Provide volunteer management for the CDF-Texas Advisory Council and identify and build coalitions with key partners and constituencies within the state.
  5. Remain current and serve as an in-house expert on child wellbeing trends in Texas.
  6. Serve on the Children's Defense Fund's Leadership Team to maintain organizational communications and cohesion.
  7. Act as a State spokesperson leveraging proactive, earned media approaches to advance the CDF vision and strategy.
Program Management and Evaluation
  1. Develop and lead the pursuit of the State Office's multi-year policy advocacy and research agenda.
  2. Direct grassroots organizing and collaboration with organizations and coalitions within the state.
  3. Manage protocols and policies for leadership development and mobilization in targeted constituencies.
  4. Oversee the development, tracking, and reporting of goals, outcomes, and performance metrics for the State Office.
  5. Collaborate with the Public Affairs team to develop, implement, and improve policy advocacy strategies.
  6. Collaborate with the CDF Freedom Schools team to coordinate direct service partnerships in the state.
  7. Participate and steward team participation in organizational development efforts.
Operations and Administration
  1. Work with the National Director of Movement Building to budget and monitor the Office to ensure sound fiscal and system management.
  2. Develop staff development plans to achieve program and operations objectives, then hire, deploy, and support staff.
  3. Develop and retain a team of high-performing staff to execute the strategy and key functions.
  4. Coordinate with Institutional Advancement to plan and implement an integrated fundraising program to meet the State Office and organization's fundraising goals.
Requirements
  1. A minimum of five years of senior management or executive leadership experience.
  2. A minimum of a bachelor's degree.
  3. Masters degree in Social Work, Public Policy, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  4. A track record of earned leadership and trust among diverse constituencies.
  5. Expertise in one or more of the following areas: cultural organizing, community organizing, policy advocacy, racial equity, or base-building.
  6. Successful experience managing a high-performing team of staff and community members.
  7. Working knowledge of program planning, organizational structure, budgeting, and administrative operations.
  8. Nuanced understanding of the fundamentals and challenges of the non-profit sector.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Service as a social sector executive director with governance, fiscal, and personnel management accountabilities.
  2. Significant leadership in child advocacy, policy, and/or philanthropy in Texas.
  3. Successful community organizing and public policy advocacy for child wellbeing and/or racial equity.
