Primary Responsibilities

The Emergency Communications Specialist (ECS) is a crucial civilian role responsible for performing tactical functions. This position entails receiving emergency (911) and non-emergency calls for Law Enforcement, entering data into a computer system while gathering information from callers, and assessing the nature, validity, and resolution of calls. The ECS will also utilize computer-generated messages, operate various communication equipment including mapping systems and telephones, address inquiries and complaints related to public safety, and relay pertinent situational information to other public safety agencies.

Education and Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Basic understanding of general office equipment
  • Must be able to obtain Florida PST Certification
Key Duties
  • Respond to both emergency (911) and non-emergency service calls; accurately assess and take appropriate action
  • Differentiate between emergency and non-emergency calls, effectively prioritizing requests for service
  • Utilize a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system to enter calls and process information, including formats, commands, and case disposition codes
  • Condense large volumes of information into clear and concise remarks in a timely manner, recalling numerous acronyms and codes essential for effective call processing
  • Simultaneously manage multiple activities while making rapid and accurate decisions
  • Quickly and accurately recognize letters, numbers, addresses, names, and license numbers received via radio, telephone, or computer monitor
  • Monitor and respond to text messages received on emergency lines
  • Oversee public access to the communication center, responding to or reporting unusual or suspicious activities
  • Notify the appropriate agency or personnel of concerning incidents
  • Operate digital mapping systems (GIS), Mobile Data Terminals (MDT), and Mobile Data Computers (MDC)
  • Familiarize oneself with jurisdictional boundaries, landmarks, public buildings, and waterways within the area
  • Provide testimony at trials, hearings, grand juries, or depositions
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date communication logs in accordance with applicable state regulations and agency policies
  • Assist in maintaining the computerized Master Street Addressing Guide (MSAG) and E911 database by collecting incorrect E911 addresses and data, relaying this information to the E-911 Coordinator
  • Document details of calls, dispatches, and messages
  • Effectively gather, convey, and establish priorities for information as needed
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with colleagues, representatives from other departments, and supervisors
  • Determine priorities for multiple requests for assistance based on the nature of the incident
  • Assist in locating or contacting individuals necessary for staff response
  • Work effectively in a structured environment with close supervision, executing lawful orders according to policies regardless of personal opinion
