The Advanced Inpatient Pharmacy Technician is recognized as a proficient member of the pharmacy technician team, tasked with executing a comprehensive array of responsibilities that require moderate to high levels of expertise. This role includes mentoring new employees in fundamental pharmacy technician tasks.
Responsibilities include performing both sterile and non-sterile compounding for a variety of medications, managing the distribution of pharmaceuticals, overseeing inventory of medical supplies, and addressing and escalating issues as necessary.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe following functions are typical of this job classification and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed.
All employees must adhere to the established standards, including but not limited to cultural sensitivity, patient care, ethical treatment, safety protocols, emergency preparedness, teamwork, and ongoing professional development.
Essential duties include:
- Executing sterile and non-sterile compounding of non-hazardous medications.
- Locating medication orders within the electronic health record (EHR) and managing returned or discontinued products.
- Monitoring expiration dates of items in medication kits and maintaining accurate inventory levels.
- Assessing documentation and escalating any out-of-range environmental monitoring values.
- Distributing medications while providing training and feedback to new staff for accuracy.
- Addressing inventory issues, removing outdated supplies, and ensuring proper product rotation.
- Conducting drip rounds and processing drips in the EHR according to standard operating procedures.
- Resolving Patient's Own Medication (POM) issues and communicating effectively with pharmacists regarding delivery system challenges.
- Timely escalation of issues raised by nursing staff, IT personnel, maintenance, and supply chain departments.
- Investigating narcotic discrepancies and reporting findings to a pharmacist as necessary.
- Managing Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) inventory, including pulls, destocking, and restocking.
- Delivering medications to specialized areas while adhering to safety protocols.
- Completing at least one advanced assignment, such as TPN compounding or hazardous sterile compounding.
Applicants must possess a combination of education and experience that equips them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with any required licenses or certifications.
Education:High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
A minimum of six (6) months of experience in sterile compounding or inpatient pharmacy settings.
License/Certification:
Must hold a valid Pharmacy Technician license, Pharmacy Intern license, or Pharmacist license issued by the California Board of Pharmacy.
