Overview of the Role

MedStar Health is in search of an Outpatient Coding Specialist to become a vital part of our Facility Outpatient Coding Operations team. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess a solid background in outpatient coding, specifically with at least one year of experience in Emergency Department coding.


As an Outpatient Coding Specialist, your primary responsibilities will include coding and abstracting records from the Emergency Department, Observation, and various outpatient services utilizing ICD-10-CM and other relevant patient classification systems. You may also engage in entry-level Ambulatory Surgery coding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately abstracts and verifies diagnoses, procedures, patient demographics, and other essential data elements.
  • Complies with all regulatory standards and participates in annual compliance training.
Continues professional development and seeks educational opportunities to enhance job performance.

  • Communicates with physicians regarding any conflicting or unclear information found in medical records, following the MedStar Coding Query Policy.
  • Timely resolves all quality review processes, including Medical Necessity reviews and Coding Quality Assurance reviews.
  • Reviews medical documentation to identify appropriate diagnoses and procedures, assigning correct diagnostic and procedural codes along with necessary modifiers, adhering to departmental accuracy standards.
Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Associate or Bachelor's degree in a coding-related field.
  • Completion of courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-CM, and CPT-4.
  • Certification as a CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CCA (Certified Coding Associate), or equivalent coding credential within one year.
  • Experience in coding and familiarity with clinical information systems, including 3M grouper and electronic medical records.
This position offers a competitive salary range of $38.49.
