Qualifications and Training

Completion of a Surgical Technician Training Program is essential.

Training as a Mandated Reporter is required.

Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is preferred.

Role Overview:
  • Act as a vital member of the surgical team by delivering patient care as the "scrubbed" technician, under the supervision of a licensed nursing professional.
  • Prepare the surgical environment for procedures, collaborating with the circulating Registered Nurse to strategize for the day's surgical cases in a designated operating room.
  • Set up the surgical site, ensuring proper draping of the patient.
  • Manage surgical instruments, sponges, needles, and other surgical tools during the operation, adhering to established protocols and procedures.
  • Uphold aseptic techniques throughout the surgical process until the patient exits the operating theater.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's requirements and inform the circulating Registered Nurse accordingly.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse with circulating responsibilities when scrub duties are not in demand.
  • Disassemble the surgical setup post-procedure and engage in the thorough cleaning of the operating room.
  • Prepare and transport the instrument table to the designated work area.
  • Care for surgical instruments in line with organizational policies, procedures, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Monitor and notify the appropriate personnel regarding the need for instrument upkeep.
  • Collaborate with fellow surgical team members to ensure sufficient sterile equipment is readily available.
  • Inform the Nurse Manager about the necessity to reorder specialized supplies.
  • Work collaboratively with other surgical team members.
  • Document relevant observations and nursing actions performed on the appropriate chart forms, in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Report any patient issues, incidents, or changes in patient condition to a Registered Nurse or supervisor.
