Under the overall guidance of the Director of Public Safety and the direct oversight of the Sergeant, the Campus Safety Specialist (CSS) serves as a security and communication services expert dedicated to ensuring the safety of the college community, including students, staff, visitors, and property.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Security Operations: The CSS is responsible for implementing a comprehensive range of authorized security protocols aimed at safeguarding the college environment.
- Security operations may involve providing safety escort services for individuals on campus; maintaining a constant presence and monitoring of entry and exit points; conducting patrols throughout the campus on foot or by vehicle; enforcing parking regulations; executing identification checks and emergency lockdown procedures as necessary; and responding promptly to health and safety incidents with appropriate measures.
- Documentation of incidents is essential when engaging with students, faculty, staff, or visitors, and when investigating unsafe conditions. The CSS must exercise sound judgment and independent decision-making to act in the best interests of the college and its community.
- Responsibilities in this role include coordinating video surveillance, audio messaging, and responses from the Public Safety division.
- Attention should be directed towards current deployments, emergency responses, and information collection for supervisory review.
- The CSS will also assist visitors by providing information and directions on campus.
- Monitoring incoming vehicles is crucial, particularly when access points are secured, ensuring that only authorized individuals gain entry.
- Notify relevant emergency services as required.
The CSS will regularly interact with:
- Residence Life personnel.
- Facilities Management.
- Local emergency services such as police and fire departments.
As a member of the Public Safety team, the CSS will:
- Receive training in all non-supervisory operational aspects.
- Occasionally participate in projects, events, and tasks within their capacity, such as conducting presentations on safety practices, providing transportation for candidates, and assisting with data collection related to campus safety programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field;
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed, with on-call responsibilities;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; proficient computer skills;
- Valid Driver's License;
- First Aid/CPR certification within six months of hire.
- At least one year of experience in security or a related public safety role is highly desirable;
- A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field;
- Familiarity with the college campus and Public Safety protocols.
