Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Coding Technician I (Full Time) to join our team at Gritman Medical Center. As a key member of our coding team, you will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely coding of patient data, meeting productivity standards, and staying up-to-date with coding guidelines and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coding and Data Entry: Utilize EPIC systems to code patient data, ensuring optimal reimbursement for the hospital. Meet productivity standards for coding assignments. Abstract data from patients' medical records using the 3M computerized abstracting system to compile accurate and timely statistical data.
  • Data Compliance: Verify the accuracy of patient information, including name, date of birth, hospital billing account number, medical record number, and hospital location, to ensure proper chart processing. Review medical charts for deficiencies and complete appropriate forms as directed by the Coding Manager or Department Manager.
  • Coding Guidelines and Compliance: Stay current with changes in CPT/HCPCS, modifiers, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and ICD-10-CM coding guidelines and billing compliance standards of Gritman Medical Center.
  • Education and Training: Train and educate staff on coding issues and stay informed about coding updates received on a monthly basis. Promote and adhere to the five fundamentals of patient communication: Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You (AIDET).
  • Quality Improvement and Safety: Participate in ongoing quality improvement activities. Practice and promote a culture of safety. Support and adhere to the National Patient Safety Goals and the organization's Standards of Behavior.
Qualifications
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: One of the following coding credentials recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-based (CCS-P) with appropriate level of experience.
  • Required Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of coding experience in an outpatient setting (physician's office or ambulatory surgery centers) within the last five years. Experience must include assignment of E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes across multiple medical specialties (e.g., Family Practice, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, OB/GYN).
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with coding software and EMR systems.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to navigate Athena EMR is highly preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
