Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Facilities Maintenance Worker CL2 is tasked with the upkeep and sanitation of the Darling Marine Center facilities. This includes executing daily, weekly, monthly, and other periodic cleaning duties as outlined in a structured cleaning program, which is evaluated regularly to ensure cleanliness standards are upheld.

This role is vital for maintaining the health and safety of the Darling Marine Center community.
Full-time position, 40 hours per week, 5 days a week. Starting pay is $17.37/hr.

The Center serves as the coastal marine laboratory for the University of Maine, operating year-round to support research, education, outreach, and meetings.

It caters to the marine interests of the University, the State of Maine, local stakeholders, and visiting scholars from around the globe.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate cleaning machinery such as vacuum cleaners, floor strippers, buffers, mops, and brooms.
  • Utilize cleaning agents and materials effectively.
  • Empty waste receptacles and clean vents, windows, doors, restrooms, furniture, walls, and floors.
  • Secure and unlock buildings as necessary.
  • Maintain clear walkways.
  • Conduct all cleaning tasks within and around the facilities.
  • May assist in moving furniture and equipment within the building and during loading/unloading.
  • Responsible for making beds and managing linens.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced staff by answering procedural and process-related inquiries.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Typically possesses a high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and relevant experience, including at least one year in custodial or grounds maintenance roles, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong communication skills; capable of collaborating with co-workers, supervisors, and building occupants, while also being able to work independently.
  • Experience in cleaning educational and office environments.
  • Familiarity with commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Must be able to regularly lift up to 40 lbs and perform other physically demanding tasks as required.
