Job Description

At Davis H. Elliot Company, Inc., we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Power Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our engineering department, you will be responsible for designing and developing electrical distribution systems for our clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop electrical distribution systems, including one-line diagrams, equipment specifications, and physical layouts.
  • Act as the project engineer for multiple projects, directing the work of less experienced engineers and drafters.
  • Perform engineering design and equipment specification functions for distribution projects from 480V to 345 kV.
  • Specify, review, inspect, and approve electrical equipment to be used in power systems.
  • Review and maintain engineering oversight of physical design, including bus design, equipment ratings, and safety/maintenance clearances.
  • Perform necessary calculations in support of engineering designs, including short circuit, step & touch potential, battery sizing, thermal rating of equipment, etc.
  • Complex problem solving at customer facilities, including power monitoring, power analysis, troubleshooting, and best installation practices.
  • Electrical equipment inspection and engineering assessment, including technical evaluations and witness testing.
  • Evaluate, monitor, direct, and manage outside contractors and vendors and other Engineers.
  • Preparing equipment specifications, analyzing bids, and making recommendations for purchase.
  • Developing scope of work, conceptual design for the projects, and execution plans.
  • Preparing engineering and construction cost and man-hour estimates and schedules.
  • Meeting and corresponding with clients or outside personnel.
  • Support construction of substations and equipment commissioning.
  • Provide detailed electrical engineering analysis, including Short Circuit, Equipment Evaluation, Coordination, Arc Flash, Load Flow, Harmonic, and Power Quality Analysis.
  • Lead the training and development of other staff engineers.
  • Provide technical oversight and review of other staff engineers.
  • Develop programs and systems to improve engineering execution and process.
  • Ensure projects meet company standards concerning quality, timeliness, profit, and customer satisfaction.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 4+ years of progressive experience in design of electrical distribution engineering projects.
  • Specific experience performing all aspects associated with electrical distribution design, including design criteria, equipment specifications, one line diagrams, general arrangements, sections, grounding, conduit plans, foundation plans, material lists, relay and control systems, control schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments, and of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to coordinate the work of various engineering disciplines and contractors to complete an integrated project.
  • Knowledge of maintenance testing and able to interpret test results.
  • Thorough understanding of protection and control design, including the ability to create settings for relays.
  • Software experience should include SKM Powertools, ETAP, Easy Power, PSCAD, Windmill, CYME, Aspen, PSS/E, AutoCAD, CDEGS, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer license (P.E.) or Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in design of electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience in EPC project delivery, Construction, Startup & Commissioning experience 480V to 345 kV experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in detailed physical design of air insulated electric substations from 34.5 kV and up.
  • Experience with high voltage substation EPC.
  • Experience in system studies.
  • Experience in both Electric Utility, Industrial, and consulting engineering environments.
  • Experience with large capacitor bank installations, including Series Compensation/FACTS installations.
  • In-depth comprehension of syncrophasors, stability, and symmetrical components.
