Aircraft Mechanic Job Description

This is a National Guard position for an Aircraft Mechanic (Title 32) in the IL 182 AW, National Guard.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, repair, modify, and service aircraft systems, components, and assemblies, both on- and off-aircraft.
  • Examine and inspect aircraft components, including landing gear, hydraulic systems, and deicers to locate cracks, breaks, leaks, or other problems.
  • Conduct routine and special inspections as required by regulations.
  • Inspect completed work to certify that maintenance meets standards and that aircraft are ready for operation.
  • Read and interpret maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine the feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
  • Maintain repair logs, documenting all preventive and corrective aircraft maintenance.
  • Obtain fuel and oil samples and check them for contamination.
  • Disassemble equipment to inspect for deficiencies.
  • Communicate with coworkers to coordinate installations or repairs.
  • Test mechanical equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Measure parts for wear, using precision instruments.
  • Replace or repair worn, defective, or damaged components, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
  • Clean equipment, parts, or tools to repair or maintain them in good working order.
Requirements
  • Must possess experience or training that has provided the skills to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.
  • Must possess specialized experience which includes experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification.
  • Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow.
  • Ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and reassembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container.

This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement.

Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.

Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.

Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.

May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968.

An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
