Animal Care Specialist

The Wistar Institute is seeking a highly skilled Animal Care Technician to join our team. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for the daily care and well-being of research animals, including feeding, watering, cleaning, and monitoring their health.
Key Responsibilities- Provide daily care and maintenance of research animals, including feeding, watering, and cleaning of cages.
- Monitor animal health and report any concerns to the veterinarian or supervisor.
- Assist with receiving and processing new animals, including quarantine and testing.
- Perform technical procedures such as handling, ear tagging, and weighing.
- Assist with health monitoring and technical procedures, including animal shipments to diagnostic labs.
- Perform daily observations and record keeping related to animal health and welfare.
- Perform euthanasia of animals as requested by PI labs or veterinarian.
- Monitor and document temperature and humidity levels in designated holding rooms.
- Operate equipment such as rack washers, autoclaves, and scrubbers.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum one year of experience in animal laboratory or related field preferred.
- AALAS ALAT or LAT certification preferred.
- Excellent oral communication skills required.
- Ability to work with NSG Breeding colony.
This position requires frequent lifting up to 35 pounds and working in an animal facility may pose risks to individuals with certain medical conditions such as asthma or allergies. Must be willing to be vaccinated against hepatitis, tetanus, rabies, and vaccinia.
