Department of Psychology and Counseling
The School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri Kansas City is looking to appoint three tenure-track, full-time Assistant Professors in the Department of Psychology & Counseling.
Our Department is a vibrant community of psychological scholars, practitioners, and educators committed to fostering student success in both academic and professional realms.
We offer a comprehensive undergraduate program in Psychology, a master’s program in Counseling accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC), and a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).
Additionally, our Department includes the Community Counseling and Assessment Services (CCAS) clinic, which serves as an in-house training facility providing valuable services to the local community.
We are eager to enhance our graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as CCAS, through these three Assistant Professor roles.
Our faculty consists of 15 dedicated members who actively engage in collaboration with diverse community partners, schools, mental health organizations, and medical institutions across various sectors.
Position Overview
The Department of Psychology & Counseling seeks candidates who exhibit a strong potential for research excellence, contribute meaningfully to our academic programs, and demonstrate a commitment to teaching and mentoring at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Successful candidates will be grouped into one of three specializations:
- Assistant Professor Position: Counseling or Counseling Psychology (Open emphasis area): We invite applications from individuals with diverse research and teaching interests, particularly those focused on Couples & Family counseling.
- Assistant Professor Position: Counseling or Counseling Psychology (Open emphasis area): We seek candidates with applied research interests and a focus on teaching core courses within our MA program.
- Assistant Professor Position: Psychology (Open emphasis area): Candidates with applied research interests in Cognitive or Clinical Psychology are encouraged to apply, particularly those interested in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Cognitive Psychology, Statistics, and Biopsychology.
Successful candidates will be expected to:
- Maintain an active research agenda that aligns with the Department’s commitment to diversity and social equity.
- Develop a record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Seek external funding to support ongoing research initiatives.
- Mentor students, particularly those in our Clinical Psychology PhD program.
- Provide service that reflects the responsibilities of the Assistant Professor rank.
We also anticipate our colleagues will contribute across our three academic programs and engage in various teaching modalities, including in-person, blended, and online formats.
Minimum QualificationsCandidates must possess a doctoral degree in a relevant field. For the Counseling/Counseling Psychology positions, candidates must be licensed or license-eligible in the state.
Preferred QualificationsPreference will be given to candidates with prior university teaching experience, a strong record of scholarship, and for the Counseling/Counseling Psychology positions, experience in clinical supervision.
